It is important to understand that AUFC is a very different organization from any other soccer club in the City or the State. All other clubs are essentially loose confederations of coaches. The individual coach has control of his or her team and has the ability to set the standards, training and direction of that team. Clubs provide some additional resources but do not have the organizational structure, the resources or desire to provide a unified, comprehensive program for education and development of the sport. As such there is great disparity in philosophy, policy and quality of training from team to team in all other clubs.

AUFC is structured as a corporate entity. It has ownership, a Board of Directors, and a Management Team with an extensive number of paid professionals. With support from its volunteer coaches, AUFC is developing and implementing an organized, comprehensive system for the training and development of our players.

We organize teams along the lines of Competitive Balance with age group perspective and varied coaching (beginning at U11).

Competitive:   Competition creates challenge. Overcoming challenge creates learning, accomplishment, confidence and success. AUFC organizes each of its teams to be competitive. Some of these teams will be competitive at the highest level of the sport nationally. That team or teams will be termed our Nationally Competitive Team(s). Others will be competitive on a regional basis. That team or teams will be termed our Regionally Competitive Team(s). Every team organized by AUFC is expected to be of a level that it can travel to tournaments on a regional basis and be competitive!

Balance:   For a player to reach his or her highest potential, they need to be playing with and against other players of the same caliber. The player should not be playing with players of significantly less ability or experience or significantly more ability or experience.

Age Group Perspective:    We want to consciously form teams within a given age group (beginning at U11) in a way to maximize the potential for development of the players understanding that children change in many ways as they go through the process of growing. This means providing the highest quality of instruction for all our teams and allowing for the free movement of players between teams as children go through various periods of their lives.

Varied Coaching:    No single coach is absolutely perfect. As players become older and more competitive, it is essential that they learn to work with different types of personalities and within different types of systems. Each coach brings a different view of the game. AUFC firmly believes that players develop best when exposed to a variety of coaches over their career. Therefore we strongly encourage rotation of coaches on a two year cycle.
